The Super Monkey Ball series has been dormant for quite a few years so it’s great to see another entry, even if it’s just an HD port. Because the tilting mechanics don’t really allow for precise movements, the advanced levels of the game call for some very difficult maneuvering. It’s a fun challenge at first, but the later levels grow increasingly frustrating. This means that the focus and challenge of many levels now involves platforming. One thing that is different from previous entries in the series is you now have the ability to jump. Roll your monkey, maneuver down twisting pathways while collecting bananas, and reach the goal within the time limit. If you’re familiar with Super Monkey Ball then you already know the drill. Just don’t expect the game to explain why the monkeys are trapped inside of balls or why they only move by tilting the entire stage. In the main story mode, you pick from a selection of monkeys, all with different stats, and progress through eight worlds each containing eight levels and a boss battle. What remains, however, is still a fully-fledged experience. Some of the mini-games which relied heavily on motion controls also didn’t make it into this port. There are also 10 party mini-games playable with up to four players. Surprisingly, there isn’t even an option for motion controls which I found a bit odd. Navigate the levels by tilting the entire stage in the direction you want your monkey to roll while avoiding the ever-increasing threat of falling to your doom.īesides the improved graphics, the biggest change comes from the removal of motion controls and the implementation of a traditional control method. You are tasked with guiding Aiai, Meemee, Gongon and the rest of the monkey crew through narrowing paths filled with obstacles, enemies, platforming challenges in order to recover your stolen bananas.

Nailing these in akin to nailing battle mode in Mario Kart, while not the main game per se', its part is enjoyable if executed right.Life is full of banana skins. A lot of those games were as fun as the mazes to play in a multiplayer format. Really perfect core great mini games from the series. Expanding on the core maze concepts with these isn't bad but in some games and later levels, the use and interactivity with some of them became more annoying than fun in later games. What I mean is, jumping, speed boost tiles, conveyor direction tiles, warp zones, stage hazards (not obstacles to navigate around), boss battles, ect need to be evaluated for proper/best placement and usage. After the first two, while the graphics were improving, the level designs got more frustrating at times.Īlso, the less gimmicks, the better. IMO, the critical part to get right is the mazes/tracks/stages designs. I would not mind doing more unlockable monkeys or what they are apparently going to do with Sonic in terms of unlockable Sega character(s?) to use in the balls. I do/did kind of like the inclusion of more characters with more "handling" characteristics. No others really stand out to me as being worth noting.

Out of all the mini games I played and liked I would have to say Monkey Target, Fight, Baseball, Pool, Golf, and Bowling. *I know I'd be super interested in a return to the glory of the first two games. I think the game design and multiplayer mini games makes this series a natural to have a new game on the Switch. Why not do a collection of the series overall? I would think the JCs would be a lot more precise than a Wiimote or a Wiimote+

Why no motion controls as this was a motion game originally? Why not an option? Thoughts on the BB Port from my point of view and the series in general/going forward and in no particular order: I really do recall loving a lot of its mazes.

I played some variant of a PS2 game in the series but its name escapes me. Also, the balance board controls weren't bad, but you had ro really perfect yourself to use them.
